 30 Years and Still Growing!

Safety Harbor Garden Club News
Volume 1

Hello, Gardeners!

Welcome to the Safety Harbor Garden Club News!

This newsletter is an effort to keep everyone up to date and informed on the events and activities related to the Safety Harbor Garden Club (SHGC).

2020 was certainly a challenging year and the challenges continue. Challenge #1 for me is to improve our communications and hopefully you will find this Newsletter a way to stay current and involved with the club.

Of course, the timeline for the following events/activities relies on the status of the COVID 19.

The Big News-

The Safety Harbor Garden Club, founded by Violet Dumanowski on April 22, 1991, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its birth this coming year on April 22, 2021.

The Board has been making plans to commemorate our 30th year with some nice mementos spread out over the course of the year. One such memento is our new logo! You voted, and the results are in! Special thanks to Rebekah Mason for all of her help designing the new logo!

*******************************************************

There has been talk about our new club logo showing up on a t-shirt!

It’s true, every 2021 current member in good standing will receive a club t-shirt with our new logo.

T-shirt distribution will happen at our picnic and 30th anniversary celebration in April.

*******************************************************

The “Folly Farmers”, a band of garden club members turned friendly garden gnomes, were celebrated with their own t-shirt at a recognition party for volunteering at Folly Farms.

All we needed was a cauldron:) Check our Facebook page for more photos of the party!

Masks were down momentarily for a few quick photo shoots around the Folly fire pit. Smores were cooked and Carol played songs on her flute!

You are invited to join the “Folly Farmers” on Monday Mornings around 9:00am at Folly Farm Nature Preserve.

Gardening continues on the flower beds as part of our VIVA grant. It’s mostly prep work and propagation at the moment but soon we will be planting two large beds to add to our gardens there!   Planting should occur around May 1st.

Partners in Planting

As mentioned earlier, the Florida Wildflower Foundation awarded the Safety Harbor Garden Club a VIVA Grant to install a Florida Native Wildflower garden at Folly Farm Preserve. We partnered with the City of Safety Harbor and have been working hard in the garden. On average, 10 of our members arrive on Monday mornings to plant, prune, weed and plan. They like to be called “The Folly Farmers”.

Well, the city has taken notice of all our hard work and is supporting us with the use of a greenhouse, supporting tool purchases and other garden supplies. And plans are for the City to provide us a shed for our use as a base for our gardening operations.

(Barbara Nelson requested a chandelier for lighting 😊 She Shed?).

2021 will see the City and the Garden Club partnership continue to grow!

With all this support we are adding a small nursery operation at Folly (this is in addition to our ongoing nursery operation at Sandy Huff’s farm). Plants will be used for Folly, our expanding gardens at Mullet Creek, Plant Sales and for our members.

Club Dues - Annual dues are $20. But for 2021 membership dues are $10.

Covid 19 has disrupted our meeting schedule and has made gatherings difficult to say the least. While we have managed to meet via ZOOM, Folly gardening and a road trip it is not what we had hoped for.  Our Board has voted to reduce our membership dues to $10 for 2021.

***Members in good standing will receive our SHGC t-shirt (distributed at our April meeting/picnic).  So, send in your due’s payment today!

Send a check made out to “Safety Harbor Garden Club” in the amount of $10 to: Paula Harvey

1811 Stonebrook Lane
Safety Harbor FL 34695

Please include a note with your current email, street address, telephone number and t-shirt size.

ROAD TRIP!

“Follow the Garden Trail”

The December road trip to the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens in Spring Hill along with side trips to the Centralia Garden Railroad Display train garden and Everlast Inc. Orchids and Supplies was enjoyed by 20+ members.

What a great way to spend the day!

Everything was planned with Social Distancing and masks mandatory.
The Nature Coast Botanical Gardens were beautiful! Even in Winter!

Very impressive! Maybe a model for our gardening at Folly Farm?

The Centralia Garden Railroad was amazing! Thank you to Mr. Doug Brainard!

And the tour of the Everlast Orchid nursery was educational and beautiful (Many Orchids were purchased, what a variety!)

Thank you, Linda Howard, for setting it all up!
